 The Window (UNICEF-card) – 1975 (K1)

The Window (UNICEF Card) – The window showing a garden with a child at play was chosen by UNICEF as a postcard and later reprinted as a greeting card. Uta-Heike painted the window in a childlike style with a sun with a face, thus creating a contrast to illustrate that this peaceful idyll was not quite real. (24×30 cm) .  Reserved.

pink school with ballons – 1974 (K2)

School in Kaarst, Germany built in 1912 and ‘moved’ by artist from dense city to big field with baloons to give children more space & happiness. (32 x 27 cm). Available.

 

Garden pavilion – 1973 (K3)

This garden pavilion (Tea-pavilion or Teehäuschen) is part of Haus Meer in Meerbusch and was built in 1850. Uta-Heike moved it from a busy road to a quiet garden, where only children are allowed to climb over the wall because it’s fun! (26 x 32 cm). Available

Bird Funeral – 1974 (K4)

Growing up during a war, made funerals a part of life. In Uta-Heikes memory, children very solemnly buried dead birds with great ceremony. (26 x 20 cm) Available.

Children dancing in sunflower- 1975 (K5)

This early Naïve painting shows the fantasy of happy children enjoying the sunshine and playing on what was Uta-Heikes favorite flower. (26×20 cm) Available.

Christmas Eve – 1975 (K6)

A Christmas Eve during the War in the little village of Mieste. Although the scene appears happy, it shows a Christmas without fathers, since most were wounded, in captivity or worse. Uta-Heike and her sister are singing carols, the gifts were in reality much more modest, and the atmosphere was certainly much sadder. (31x39cm) Available.

Children on the beach NL – 1973 (K7)

This beach is in Holland. Uta-Heike deliberately left out the many people, yearning for a lonely beach. This was her late husband Axels favorite and is not for sale. (26x20cm)

boy at the window -1974 (K8)

Uta-Heike called this painting boy at the window. She always yearned for a big brother and this is how she imagined him. She is bring to life an old fairy tale, where you sprinkle sugar on the windowsill to attract your dreams. (30x38cm) Available.

Grandma Ida’s garden – 1975 (K9)

Uta-Heike painted an idyllic garden with a Grandmother giving apples to her two happy granddaughters. In real life Grandma Idas garden was too beautiful for careless girls to play in. (26x32cm) Available.

Grandma reads – 1975 (K10)

“Grandma Ida reads” was painted for the competition “human being and the book” of the ECON publishing house (Frankfurt), the painting was 86th from 1200 entries from all over Germany. Again the grandmother is idealised and far from reality. (26x32cm) Available.

Three girls with cats – 1973 (K12)

The picture with the three girls and the cats was simply intended to express childlike joie de vivre.  (26x22cm) Sold.

a ride on the hay wagon – 1973 (K13)

A ride on the hay wagon was very special, it was great to be able to look up at the sky from on top of the hay. The clouds and treetops fascinated Uta-Heike as a child. But if the hay wagon was already loaded too high, then she had to walk the long way home. (26x22cm) sold.

hay stacks – 1973 (K14)

The children liked to play “hide-and-seek” in the sheaf houses, where hay was stacked to dry. This was not allowed, because the kids we always tipped things over. But, Uta-Heike remembers that “we did it again and again, anyway”. (26x20cm) Available.

House with children – 1973 (K15)

There was a messy little house at the end of the village in Mieste. It was filled with many children and not very clean. Uta-Heikes was not allowed there but it held a great attraction for her. (26x22cm) Sold.

herding cows -1973 (K16)

During the holidays the children often herded cows on a distant pasture: They were driven out by horse cart in the morning, had “slag-sandwiches” to eat for lunch, they passed the day watching the cows and looking for mushrooms. In the evening they were driven home with the milk carts. (26x22cm) Sold.

Uta-Heike has no memory of riding a horse from when she was small. This painting shows her children riding a neighbors horse during the first visit back to her home town under Communist rule in 1973. (26x20cm) Available.

Handcarts – 1975 (K18)

Once again Uta-Heike painted her own children in a situation that she would have loved to have lived herself. This shows the farmyard in 1973 with kids playing with handcarts. (26x20cm) Available.

Easter – 1974 (K19)

The Easter celebration was painted in Uta-Heikes first Spring in New York. It is full of joy and life. The children happily play rings-around-the-Rosie, even the pansies want to dance along. The Easter baskets fill themselves and in the trees you can discover the pulsating life. (26x22cm) Sold.

snowman- 1973 (K20)

Uta-Heike often incorporated good and bad in her paintings. Happy childhood memories show children building a snowman, but danger lurks. It is about to be destroyed again. (26x22cm) Sold.

St. Martins Children with Lanterns – 1975 (K21)

St. Martins is a popular festival in Germany, where kids go from door to door “singing for sweets”. Uts-Heike remembers them as St. Nicolas parades, where she was often too shy to stand in the front where the treats were handed out. This painting was chosen by UNICEF for the picture archives. Children welcoming spring and sunshine painted during Uta-Heikes first spring in America. Sold.

the well – 1976 (K23)

This scene was painted from memories of East Germany while Uta-Heike was living in Scarsdale NY. Sold.

ball games in the yard – 1974 (K24)

This picture shows children happiliy bouncing a ball against the door. In reality this made so much noise that they were soon chased away and asked to play elsewhere. Sold.

jumping in the hay – 1973 (K25)

While this picture shows children happily jumping from a hayloft into the hay, this was actually a mixed memory, since Uta-Heikes little sister was injured on one of these jumps. Luckily she there was no lasting damage! (26x22cm) Sold.

The children often played “wedding” . This was a girly game and only the little boys could be persuades to play. (20x26cm) Sold.

Children loved playing shop in East Germany during the war. This was a sharp contrast to reality, where you often spent hours standing in line for very little food. (26x22cm) Sold.

Reading – 1975 (K28)

Children reading books in peace, a very rare pleasure. Uta-Heike remembers having to hide away to read, since there is always something to do on a farm if you are found. (26x22cm) Sold.

This little stream is in Mieste, Uta-Heike learned to swim there. The children always went in groups since the way was long and went past a cemetary. (32x26cm) Available.

Uta-Heike made travel or hiking a theme in three of her early pictures. As a child she often dreamed of leaving home. Here it is auspicious with a rainbow. This painting was chosen by UNICEF for their archives. Sold.

Pink School (Original) – 1972 (K39)

This is the first version of the pink school (later painted with balloon trees). Uta-Heike placed it on a large free space, above the school, a paper kite smiled as it flew away. Sold.

Mieste – 1975 (K40)

This amazing painting is a map like view of Uta-Heikes village Mieste (East Germany). It was painted entirely from memory and if you google Mieste you realise how close this is to reality. (104x79cm) Sold.

Church of Jeggau – 1975 (K41)

This church is in a little East German town called Jeggau. Uta-Heikes Grandmother was born in Jeggau and baptized, confirmed and married in this church. It was painted at an angle. Sold.

Lollos Garden – 1976 (K42)

Uta-Heike painted her painter friend Lollo Meyers garden. Including Lollo, her husband, dog and the whole Bresser family coming to swin in the pool. If you lool closely you can see the signature sun in the bottom of the pool. Sold.

Scarsdale in spring – 1976 (K43)

This shows Scarsdale in spring. When Uta-Heike looked out of the kitchen window, she had this fabulously beautiful view. (64x53cm) Available.

Camping – 1976 (K44)

Camping – Easter 1975 we went camping with an American family near Atlantik City. It was bitterly cold, but beautiful. A year later, Uta-Heike painted the scenery with the help of photos. She gave this picture to the Glicks, their friends, as a farewell gift. Sold.

Campfire – 1979 (K45)

This picture of children sitting around a campfire was painted in America after Uta-Heikes son went on a camping trip with the boy scouts. Sold.

sailboat called Antje – 1978 (K46)

The inspiration for this painting was a trip to Yellowstone, this shows Custer State Park. The sailboat was named after Uta-Heikes sister Antje, whom she finally felt closer to as an adult. (32x40cm)Available.

BP Christmas Card – 1987 (K47)
